These past few days I've been struck by loneliness. I didn't actually anticipate anything before the pandemic started. I thought as long as I have my (ex) partner around, and spend a lot of activities online- everything would be just fine, that things wouldn't affect me as much. But I guess I was wrong, the situation got into me in so many ways. Materially, physically, mentally.
My family is one of those affected by Covid-19 financially. It hit our family real hard. Thank goodness along these past few months up until now, we've been managing and finding solutions. And we're hoping for things to get better. To be honest, I haven't been worrying that much. We always find a way, somehow. On the other side, there's a rushing guilt that my mind kept wandering to other sillier problems. It seems like the situation is leeching on my mental health, so much that I've been having some of the darkest rumination in my life.
The aftermath? Losing my 3 month-old relationship. Thoughts of death. Constant despair and loneliness. It's fair to say that this turns to be the lowest point in my life. On a positive note, I always try to look for someone- a friend, my ex(es), my family to take me away from myself. But none of them could ever seem to fill the void. I still crave attention and companion. And honestly, it kills myself to realise how I'm doing.
Then somehow, I started looking for "talk with stranger" on Google. The search led to a random chatting site. I started talking with one stranger. I asked with the usual convo starter when they suddenly shared their problem. I tried to listen and share some of my thoughts and advices. At the end of the conversation, they said that they felt a lot better talking to me. Somehow, without even saying a thing about myself, I felt the same on my side.
Another thing happened when I went to the park yesterday. I was planning to do some work when an a man with gray hair suddenly sat next to me. "I had a terrible mood today", he said. I instantly put my headphones down and turned to him. I asked if he would mind sharing with me. He then started talking about his son who's having mental health problem and blocking him out. "He always feels like he's never enough. He's very volatile at the moment and I kept telling him it's just because of the situation", he explained. Somehow, it hit me hard. It feels as if he's talking about me. His stories went on and I realised how stressed he was. I kept listening and tried giving advices for him despite our age differences. I realise I've always liked listening to other people's stories, especially from those who've lived longer than me. "It might be good for you to take your own advice too, it's just because of the pandemic. Things are going to get better soon, and when it does your son will look back and understand how much you care for him", I said. He laughed.
Then for the next two hours he talked about other things: multi-culture, corruption, Korean peninsula, World War Two. The longer he talked, the less I understood the things he was talking about. But I stayed and kept listening to him. I knew that he just needed someone to talk to and listen to him, as much as I do. "You can be frank with me, I'm a strange person, huh? Talking to you about everything", he asked. "No you're not. I think you have a very broad knowledge, and I should learn to be like you. I like listening to people's stories I guess", I replied. He smiled. "Do you feel better after sharing them with me?". Then he said, "You remember told you I had a terrible mood today. After talking to you, I feel a lot better. I feel like you're trustful. I'm really glad I met you.". They became the words that I needed, the kindest words I've ever received from a stranger.
We parted and I left with contentment. I realised that I wasn't only looking for attention or companion. I was looking to feel useful as a human being. To feel like my presence matters and could make some else's day better. The healing that I need doesn't come only from talking to people about myself and my problems. It also comes from listening to people and their problems. I think that just resembles the beauty of being humanely human, social creatures that need each other. And the fact that complete strangers can make each other's day brighter just adds to the wonder. If you feel down, talk to someone. Who knows both of you might be just what each other needed.

"I believe that it's like drawers", he said.
"You open one drawer, fill it with stories, and sometimes at a certain point, you have to close that drawer. Maybe one day, you'll open a new one. That doesn't mean that drawer is gone. It will always be there. It's a part of your life. It's just not relevant in the present."

I think I've lived long enough to say that I don't agree with phrases saying there can only be one to true love in your life-- the others are just trials. I don't think it's fair that even after you shared some part of your life with someone, went through the good and bad, knowing their past, present, and future, endured one another's best and worst, shared certain depths of feeling— you have to know that they're not real.
I think I've lived long enough to say that you don't stop loving someone. If it's truly love, it stays there in another form. The kind where you always hope for their best. Their happiness. Even when they hurt you in the past, or you hurt them. You just want them to have a good life. And excel in it. Even without you in the picture. You let them go, and want them to let you go. You don't necessarily long for their presence in your life, nor your presence in theirs. There's a sense of beauty in knowing both of you carry on with your own journeys.
I think I've lived long enough to say that despite that, you could still have the capacity to love someone new. To open another drawer and share it with someone, filling it with wonderful stories together and hoping for it to last. 'Cause love is a beautiful thing and you don't have to curse love when it doesn't work out for you in the past. Even though there's probably no one true love, there might be one true drawer. One that will manage to stay open for the rest of your journey. One where you manage to pass the outgrowing processes by keep growing for each other until you find the stability to grow with the same pace. Until death do you part.

Hi. Self-isolation got me to finally get back into writing.

I'm fine. If that's what I should write. I'm one of the lucky ones who are perfectly healthy and self-isolating at home and doing social media challenges. Never in my life have I ever imagined living in this situation, knowing that something bigger than myself and other humans is actually happening and taking control away from us. If I'm allowed to be honest.. it affected me in so many ways. I feel aimless and demotivated.
Before I started this year, I set some goals and resolutions as usual. This year was supposed to be special, and one of the highlight was Arena Dance Competition in Singapore. I was in Ascendant DC's competing team, training under Gina Michael. As I was staying for some days of the dance camp, and considering the fact that I just came back from my Indonesia trip, I figured I needed to save a lot of money. I made budgeting like never before, from the day I came back to Melbourne up to the trip. I was being very strict on my income and expenses. So strict it really stressed me. I had to force myself to say no to most hangout invitations. Be really careful with my spending. But I managed to do it, cause I had purpose.
It really struck me when the news of Covid-19 outbreak in Singapore was getting worse and the event was cancelled. I felt sad and numb, but mostly numb. I've already bought the round trip ticket and accommodation, and they were non-refundable. They went up in flames and it disappointed me, but I think what hurt me more was the effort that I did. I worked extra hours, being very strict not to eat out or shop, having the tight budgeting on top of my head everyday. Well, gotta suck it up eh? We can always look for money again, and at least I learned and practiced how to organize my spending and save money better.
A part of me just kept asking "why?" to the universe. I worked hard. I worked my ass off. And it just took the reward away from me. Not only the reward, it was the whole thing: my biggest highlight of this year. I know it's not about me. It's affected so many people and I wasn't the one left with the worst condition. The world doesn't revolve around me. But oh well, the human inside me. It made me feel like my hard work goes in vain. I guess that's what's demotivating me, and Arena Singapore was just the start.
Things are very uncertain around here these days, and probably around the world too. Australia just announced lockdown on Sunday (5 days ago), and we won't know how long we need to be in this situation. Business is slowing down everywhere. My workplace has been cutting work hours, and my family too is quite affected by the situation. I'm starting to feel worried about them. My studies has moved to online learning. I don't even know whether staying here in Australia is the right decision for me. There's a lot to think about, and I can't even think well because there's no timeline for this situation. We won't know when it will end, get better, or get worse; hence it's hard for us to see what's ahead and plan.
I can only feel grateful that I'm still healthy, that I have Mitsumi and Kaho here. That I can still survive and have my job (for now). I can still teach online dance class. I hope that my family and my closest people are okay and coping well with the situation. I will try to get myself up to do things despite the uncertainty of everything.
I guess we can all do nothing and be patient in getting through this. Hoping the situation will get better soon. It's something bigger than us, outside our control. We can only do our best in what we can still do. And enjoy the moment home with our family (not for me). And maybe get back to that other hobby (like me). Or do the things we've always wanted to do at home but haven't got the time to. Also try and be grateful knowing the fact that our precious earth is having quite a good break from our harmful human activities. We can get through this. :)

After 10 months of living in Melbourne, I'm finally back in my hometown, Surabaya.
It feels so good to be back. Seeing my family and my closest friends and being able to hug them. Visiting the spaces I used to spend time in. It honestly feels like forever and just yesterday at the same time.
What I realize the most was that everyone grew in different ways. Including myself. Being away from each others for a long time make changes seem significant. Thankfully the feelings are the same. They never fail to make me feel completely free to be myself and comfortable around them. I think it's the reason this place is called home.
This home now feels like a wonderland for me. A place to take a break and relax, surround myself with people that I love and love me. Where I just have to make the most out of everyday by enjoying moments with them. Where I feel safe and don't have to try so hard to adapt and fit in with the environment. At the same time, this place is a reality that I've been away from. It reminds me of a lot of questions and facts about the present and future. The ones that have been invincible to me in Melbourne, but were actually there all along. They give me anxiety and insecurity, and at the the same time, reflection and direction.
Looking back at the life that I left in Melbourne, I started to see it in a bigger picture. A perspective that I haven't got the chance to see from. 10 months. I wanna appreciate that guy who struggled to adapt and build a life in that place. Who put the energy and effort to find a decent job and support his own living, get himself a few amazing new friends as support system, who managed to unlock some milestones in his education and dance life, built a decent network, and who's starting to feel comfortable with himself and his new life in general. Even though you constantly feel like you're not doing enough, you are actually doing well buddy. :) More to come next year, okay?

| First year in Melbourne :) |
There are many things that I haven't told you. Believe me, a lot of things have happened. And many aspects of my life has changed, for better or for worse. And since things are starting to pile up, I feel like it's time I need to get back to this habit. Writing; my sanctuary, my sanity keeper, my cure, and one of my way of leaving my mark in this world.
Meanwhile, let's enjoy these next 12 days here. I'm home! :)
Mendadak banget ya mok. Merepotkan memang. :)
Kita mulai deket waktu kamu masuk LM. Aku inget pol kamu ga mau tak peluk sama sekali karena menurutmu aneh peluk lawan jenis. hahaha funny how that felt like a long time ago karena akhirnya itu jadi sesuatu yang biasa buat kamu. Hana, Ipin, Lim, Bon (Speaking of which, I admire your friendship so much.)
You're always that pure energy of light. I'm the darkball. Kamu selalu positif, aku cenderung negatif. We beautifully accepted our differences. And in a short time, you become one of my closest people.
Lampu kamarku hari ini nyala waktu aku pulang. Padahal aku ga pernah keluar rumah lupa matiin lampu. Kenapa segitunya?
In my head, you had this whole life ahead of you. I knew for sure wonderful things are coming your way. Kamu baru banyak prestasi, kamu punya banyak banget mimpi di hidupmu, di nari. I love how you tell me those dreams of yours in our phone calls. Betapa terbakarnya kamu. And in that moment, who would've expect that this kind of burning passion will be put out soon? Rasanya nggak mungkin. Tapi terjadilah apa yang terjadi. Mau salahin kamu. Kenapa nggak ati2. Kenapa nggak dengerin temen-temenmu. Kenapa kepedean. Kenapa sok kuat. Kenapa keras kepala banget jadi orang. Tapi aku udah bisa bayangin ketika aku ngomelin kamu gini, kamu pasti cuma bales ketawa dan cengar cengir seperti biasanya. hahaha mok..mok...
Marah sama alam semesta. Mengembalikan kamu. Lagi-lagi, kita manusia nggak bisa apa-apa. Kamu bilang kalau memang sudah rencananya, kalau memang sudah waktunya, ya sudah. Sekarang aku nggak bisa apa-apa selain percaya sama kamu.
Kedua, aku sedih.
Hatiku hancur disini mok. You make me feel devastated and you left me no option. Belum lagi ngelihat orang2 terdekat kita sakit ngerasain kehilanganmu mok. Dan aku gak bisa apa2. My heart aches so so bad. It hurts me so much. Hahaha keterlaluannnnnn kamuuuuuuuuuu! Tadi pagi aku pergi kerja pakai kacamata :))))) wtf. gara2 kamu. bahkan mau keluar rumah sore tadi aku harus telpon Inez biar nggak nangis. Sumpah mok, aku jadi cengeng gegara kamu.
Kepergianmu ngga cuman dirasain orang2 terdekatmu mok, but the whole Indonesian dance scene. Hey, you should be proud of that. I would love to see you at a later point ketika kita sudah capai mimpi2 kita bareng2 mok. Tapi kembali lagi, alam semesta berkata lain. Nonetheless, aku sangat bangga sama kamu.
In such a short time in the dance community, banyak hal yang sudah kamu lakukan. Bikin pagelaran sendiri sama BDC. Ikut HHI, WOD. Bikin koneksi sama dancer2. Ikut mimpin dan menggerakan LM. Wow...soooo much things you did back there. Satu tahun terakhir aja, character developmentmu luar biasa. At least I am relieved to know that you maximized your time mok. And I hope you are satisfied with what you did as well.
I'm glad that you've been there in my lifeline. I'm glad that at some point in my life, I got to know such a warm, gentle, wonderful soul. Who makes everyone around her happy with her presence. I'm glad to call you my little sister. :) Thank you so much for your constant faith and encouragement for me. And I am proud to have put my faith in you too. You did really well.. And I promise I will make you proud. I will try and carry some of your dreams ya mok. Hope the universe lets me fulfill them.
So this is all I got to say.
Maaf aku juga nulisnya semerawut ya mok.. there's too much that I want to say. Jesus Christ...it felt like yesterday.
I hope you're reading this somewhere up there.
Looking forward to the day we catch up again yaa..
I'll bring you a lot of good stories for sure.
I miss you, dek.
See you when the day comes.

(Link to my latest post on Medium: https://medium.com/@reinhardgouw/start-small-c4c9141e0315)

It's been four months since I arrived in Melbourne. It feels like forever. So many things have happened. I finished my first semester at Monash University, I got in and out of job- twice, and I got a teaching slot in a dance studio. To be honest? It's getting harder.
The first three months felt like it was a holiday. Everything felt so new. I started to create this scheme and define this city, or so to say, this new life that I have here in Melbourne. But then, up to this point everything has been crystalizing. And when I reflect upon myself, I feel like I started losing a sense of purpose.
To be fair, I admit that the main story has been about dance. I plotted a lot of things, set a lot of goals around this aspect of life. It's been my number one priority, even when I started looking for jobs. I blocked some work availability schedule for dance and that got me to rejection in some places. For all I know, dance has always been my home, and it's the first thing that made me feel comfortable here in this country; it gave me the warmest welcome by offering so many opportunities, so many connections. I even found some of the greatest friends here through dance. The dance scene made me feel accepted, acknowledged, appreciated. Being a newcomer, it's really a privilege for me to feel this close to home just by dancing. And I will always be grateful for this gift.
But on the other side, I put my uni and work life below it, despite of the fact that they were the reasons I went to Australia in the first place. Well, to be honest, my main reason was just to press the restart button. Frankly saying, to run away. To reinvent, recreate, redefine myself. Boy, teaching dance overseas? It was one of my dream and it's happening. Right now. But I lost sense of focus. I forgot that reinventing, recreating, redefining myself really don't mean I'll be doing the same thing and expanding myself in that area. I guess it means more about expanding myself in other areas too.
Dance has always been the greatest story of my life. It took me to places, connected me to people, experiences once I could only wish for in life. It gave me confidence, happiness, contentment. But I think it's also the time for me to seek these in other aspects of life that I can pursue too. It's time for me to put more attention and nurture the other things that I want to do in life. Things that might even be bigger than myself.
So, just as news, I just got a scholarship from Deakin University, the same major, Communications. The difference is, it's gonna be more practical and the units feel more familiar to me than the ones they have at Monash. So I decided to accept the offer as it is also generally cheaper than finishing my study at Monash. I'm seeing this as a restart button, as the scholarship means I have to pursue certain standard in my academic performance and also be actively engaged in the uni activities (as they also give the scholarship awardees the opportunity to join their excellence program, some kinda mentorship in leadership and everything).
With all that's happening in my dance and work life, it might be fair to say that the universe is reminding me of my main purpose (even the only reason I'm able to stay) here in Australia. I want to expand myself doing and learning things I'm not used to. And see where it takes me. Even when it's uncomfortable. Even when it's challenging. Even when it feels like holding the steer of a car on your own for the first time.
As from what I've learnt this far, it's not easy. Feeling stupid becomes a normal thing. Loneliness. God, it's always there lurking. But as I read the messages that my closest people gave me before I go in form of letters, they always remind me that it's a process that I should embrace.
Process. How hard it is for me to let its meaning soak into my reasoning. Process is always intertwined with the variable of time. Process is always before result, and more importantly it's not result itself. It can be hard, daunting, and mostly uncomfortable. But most of the time, it's gonna be worthwhile. And that's what I should always remember; I should stop defining myself by the process. If anything, I should only define myself by my endurance, persistence, and hard work during the process. And gratitude all throughout the process of coming out the other end a better person.

Hi folks. It's been 2 weeks since I moved to Melbourne. Man. Here I am.

| How my farewell with certain someone felt |
If you ask me how I felt, I would say it felt flat. I think it might be my unconscious mechanism to not feel sad because honestly? I had a lot of insecurities and anxieties inside. Am I gonna be able to speak english fluently? Cause I tend to stutter when I meet natives. Am I gonna be able to make friends? Am I gonna be able to find some work and buy my own bread? Am I gonna be able to learn how to cook? Am I gonna be able to survive in this whole new country? Mostly because I never lived outside my hometown. So yeah, I didn't feel anything. Prolly because it was too much for me to handle.
The emotions started flooding in around D-2. Man. You don't know how many times I cried alone in my room. Thinking about how I'm not gonna meet Mom, Dad, my Sister, Vodka, Ste, Ipin, Samantha, Jay, Ce Bing, BDC, LM. I'm not gonna spend every Monday and Thursday practicing with LM. And jumping to a whole new world. Shit just started. getting. real. And I was glad to spend the last night having a deep convo with my sister. A thing we almost never did because we're too busy with our own lives. :)
So the day came. My family + Ipin + Samantha accompanied me to the airport. In the airport, my cousin hired a VIP airport service which was VERY convenient. Other than picking me up at the lobby with my luggage, carrying my documents, checking me in....I'll tell you later. So I was surprised that a large number of people showed up!!!!! Honestly I didn't expect it to be that many. Last Minute Street Crew, Devina, Yuli, Hana, Valen, Febe, Ste on video call. Wow. I'm just so fuckin' grateful for them in my life. God is so kind to have given me these wonderful people.
I feel so loved. I feel supported. Not just by coming, they gave me some token of love with positive affirmations and wishes. They made me feel confident. Whole. Content. And I guess it's what I had been needing for this new trip. Thank you so much. I love you guys. (Also from Abel in Singapore transit!)
Thank you for your faith in me. I hope I can make everyone proud.
*ah, as for the VIP airport service. I had to board the airplane at around 9 if I'm not mistaken, And at 8.50, I was still busy saying goodbye. And when we (me and Chachia, my friend who's coincidentally on the same flight) got to the immigration portal, it was really crowded. I thought it was impossible, but there was surprisingly a private line for VIP services! So we didn't need to Q at all. When the people who were Qing saw us, they're like bitch how'd you get there
- - - - - - - - - - -
So that's how I said see you again to my hometown.
Now Melbourne. I guess I've been doing well! Surprisingly.
The first two days were overwhelming for me. Had I not known Jasmine Wirawan, I would prolly have gone crazy. She picked me up from the airport, and has been giving me an essential Melbourne 101! She taught me a lot of things from Myki cards (for trains and buses), groceries, the city, the people, just everything. And I will forever be grateful that you're my day 1 in this city, Min! So after the overwhelming information in the first two days, and spider issues in the house and in my room in the first week.... I guess I'm settling in alright.
Spiders. Let's talk about spiders. They're one of the creatures I get creeped out of. I mean dude, shit's got 8 legs! And there's one in my incubator when I was a baby! (my sister saved me that time, thank you) Anyway. Shit's fricken real here. I've heard before that spiders are easily found in Australian homes. Especially in Summer. So I found a lot in my share house and even my room. There were 10+ of them, dead and alive. I found two crawling on top of my bed. I found one big ass spider crawling under my bed, and on top of my desk. Jesus Christ. But I've levelled up from using broom to tissue to pick the dead corpses. Yay. Now they only pop up once every few days.
Dance life. One word. Crazy. In two weeks, I joined 3 classes, and I got a chance to attend the practice of one of the finest team in Australia. I can feel a huge wave of positivity coming from this dance scene, and I'm really really grateful of how The Universe is leading me. I used to question why I was led to dance full-time in the past 2 years. But now it all starts to make sense. It gives me a lot of opportunity to thrive, to feel confident, even to travel the world. Dance is one of the pillars that built me, and it's one of the very few things that make me feel at home. I promise myself I won't stop dancing and thriving in this passion.
So whoever you are, if you need this. Everything will make sense someday.
Just put your faith in the universe, and believe that it's guiding you to where you should be.
Social life wise, I was honestly surprised that I got to stay me even in english-speaking environment! I read a theory that different languages can create different personalities inside of you. But I guess it doesn't affect my social perks. I can still be the Reinhard who feels bold (and a bit cocky I know) and open for convos. Man, it feels really good to be able to be yourself in a whole new place. I even feel that some of my perks are enhanced here (as the people are not conservative and they are REALLY nice). So yeah, it feels awesome.
Groceries. I hated groceries shopping on my first day when Jasmine taught me. It's confusing. It's something a mother should do. But you don't know how much I fricken love doing groceries now. I would do it everyday. I would do it at midnight. Try me. I. LOVE. GROCERIES. And I'm learning how to cook yay.
So yeah, it's been great 2 weeks! Melbourne is an easy city to adapt to, and the people are nice (yes, I keep telling people that when they ask me. But that's because it's true!). All is well. The only thing that gives me anxiety is that I want to find some work as soon as possible. I had a good amount of saving for now, but I don't wanna be having hard time on living expenses and burden my family in the next months, so yeah. Wish me luck.
Wow, it's a long post! (with a lot of bonus pictures)
There's just so many things I wanna write down. I will try to write more so that it doesn't pile up.
Thank you Universe, for everything.

It's 2019 and I already missed my first goal: Write a blog once a month. Great! I missed writing a post on January. But I'll catch up soon. Believe me, I bet I would write a lot more when I'm there. Because you know, loneliness. Being here with a lot of people is enough to make me feel lonely at times. Can't imagine when I'm there. But then again, I'll survive. I always do.
Having annual resolutions is starting to get old for me. So I didn't really spend time thinking about it. But there is one goal that I've been keeping in mind, that I want to pursue this year.
It's to stop degrading myself.

I'm always used to degrading myself in anything that I do. If you are an old reader, you would remember me writing one of this shit on 2015. "What's so special?" That's always the question I ask myself whenever I experience something good in life. So here's another chain of thoughts that I used to have whenever people say or whenever I say to myself:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
"Kamu enak ya Re, liburan terus."
Kalo gaada orang tua aku ga akan liburan terus kok. Kalau pun liburan pakai duit sendiri juga maksa biasanya duitnya. Ga ada yang bisa dibanggain. I just don't have a decent job and have a lot of time to spend useless things with, that's all.
When I taught a class out of town.
Hahaha, Re, Re. Ga perlu lebay. Kamu belum ada apa-apanya sama mereka.
"Keren banget, bisa lomba dance sampe luar negeri!"
Hahaha, biasa aja. Belum pernah menang juga. Bahkan pernah peringkat terbawah. Kalau sudah sering bawa piala baru aku pantes bangga.
"Kinerjamu bagus, Re."
Terngakak. Kamu gatau aja seberapa malas aku dan seberapa suka aku procrastinate. I never really did my best. Aku ga seniat itu. Aku ga pintar atur waktuku.
"Enak ya Re, kamu masih bisa jalanin passion kamu dan hidup dari sana." or basically everytime I try to be grateful and enjoy my dance life completely.
Hahaha. Lihat Joditha. Lihat Lia. Temen-temenmu semua tambah pinter. Kamu otak kanan terus aja yang diasah.
When I won something.
Ga perlu alay.
"Kamu itu pinter Re, pasti bisa sukses."
Sayangnya aku terlambat. Aku belum tahu mau ngejar apa. Ya lihat aja nanti waktu udah pindah, semoga aku bisa excel in life di sana. Btw pinter? hahaha aku cuman pinter ngomong aja. Dan pinter menimbulkan image bahwa aku pinter. The fact is? I'm not. I'm just a dumbass guy who likes to deeptalk without doing any real thing in life.
"Kamu pasti bisa."
Banyak yang lebih bagus dari aku dan aku ga mau lebih jelek dari mereka. Jadi mending enggak.
and the list goes on.

There. Those are the kind of thoughts I always have in my head. I always counter my gratitude with comparison, with negativity. I always told myself not to be too happy because there are others who are better, who did more, who achieved more. Or because I think people just don't know the "reality" that I'm not that good.
I became this negative guy having hard time to feel grateful and content about myself and about life in general. I always look up and forget to look down. I haven't been kind to myself. Too much self-loathe. Now I'm a bitterfuck.

When I think of the reasons why, I came up with two theories:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
1. Instagram Theory
Have you heard? Instagram is proven by research (which I read on some magazine in an indie cafe) to be the worst social media ever invented, in terms of mental health. And I guess I would agree because as I have been discussing with my closest people, we start to compare our lives with those of others. Unconsciously. Have we ever sit down to realize that everything on Instagram is fabricated? People only display the best version of themselves. Blinded to the dark sides. Moreover, with compelling captions to inspire (do you know that people also tend to believe things more profoundly when there are good narratives?). I'm not saying it's a bad thing to do. I'm just saying that it can harm our mental health. We start comparing our lives to all these best versions of people. We even forget that our life (we feeds) could be a "benchmark" to their lives too.
In the end, it's hard for us to be grateful for every little positivity on our lives (even if we do, it's only for the gram and its narrative competition) because we are so used to see others achieve more in theirs. Is growth now determined by comparison between ourselves and other people? Or we should remember that growth is when we get better from our past selves?
From now, I will change my "halah Re, baru ngajar berapa kali di berapa kota aja. yang lain lho sudah lebih banyak dari kamu" to "look at you Re, you used to dream of teaching outside of town. Sekarang akhirnya kesampean. What a milestone. Your old self must be very proud of you". Lebih enak nggak? Iya. Oke kamu juga gitu ya. Terserah mau bilang alay atau apa. I will be more kind to myself. Period.
2. "Best friend" Theory
One of my best friend I used to be close with, a very smart, logical and realistic one, excel in life career-wise; used to be my tag team in university life. Always guiding me. Always on the same team. It's like we have the same mindset and work pace. I always look up to this person and seek guidance. I even made a lot of life choices according to the advices I was given. I even think of them as older sibling who I could always rely to. Being realistic, sometimes I received comments like "Kamu benernya nggak kerja keras sih, cuman kamu aja yang pinter bikin impresi sampe orang ngerasa kamu kerja keras.". Or just any "realistic" comments that made me feel pessimistic about myself. It got worse when we graduated and have the same job, even worse when we chose different path after. Always succeeded in making me feel I chose the wrong path, not good enough in my job, don't excel enough in career and pretty much in life. What they said is always true, in logical way. That's why I always trusted them. But it always took away my hope. Now I just realized that it's a matter of difference in timeline, mindset, and what we want to pursue in life. I would never want to be like them in the same way that they would never want be like me, but that doesn't mean I chose the wrong path. I didn't regret dancing my way to this position. Living my dance life to the full extent while visiting different cities, being ignorant about knowledge of startup and business shits, and not working 9-5 in front of laptop.
To you who realized it was you, it's not me hating you. It's just me hating why I was so naive to not see our differences. Your life suits you perfectly well and I'm glad you're enjoying it to the full extent. But I realized that I don't want your kind of life and I realized that it's toxic to think I should. Moving soon, I will re-imagine what I want in my life. It doesn't have to be all about career and serious shits. But I will definitely start enjoying and feel content about everything I'm doing from now on.

You must be bored by now, reading this long post. But yeah, that's my thinking process towards this goal. In conclusion, I will stop degrading myself. Treat myself better by letting gratitude flow freely. Feel content of every little goodness in my life. And even if it's luck, I will believe in universe that I am worthy of it (thank you Ainun Bahrir for reminding me of that on the "Powerless" post). Embrace my happiness and not giving it my cold shoulder.
I love my life. What I've been through and what is to come.
I love myself.
2019, come at me! It's gonna be great.
